100 Best Dog Hashtags You Can Use in Your Next Post in March 2021

Hashtags are a handy way to help get your canine content discovered on Instagram.

In this article, you’ll learn:

How Choosing The Right Hashtags Can Help Make Your Dog Instagram Famous

Hashtags are a powerful way to grow your dog’s account. These words and keywords help categorize content across the platform and allows for users to find posts related to that specific hashtag.

For example, whenever anyone searches on Instagram for a specific hashtag, they are taken to a screen that shows Top Posts and Most Recent. Your goal is to rank on the Top Posts tab so whenever someone searches for that hashtag, they will see your content.

The more people that discover your content from hashtags, the better your chance for engagement and follows from these users.

You can use up to 30 hashtags on each post, and up to 10 hashtags per Story to help get your content discovered.

If you want to brush up on hashtag basics, I recommend you read this article to learn what hashtags are, how they work, and how you can use them for your feed and Story posts.

However, you shouldn’t just use any random hashtags on your post. You must be strategic and smart about what hashtags you use.

Hashtag Density and Why it Matters

Hashtags come in all shapes and sizes. As you choose which 30 hashtags to use, keep in mind what their density is.

What I mean by density is the current number of posts that have used that hashtag. Said another way, the higher the hashtag density, the harder the competition.

This matters because if a hashtag density is too high (i.e., too competitive), the less likely your post will make it to the Top Posts section. If you’re using all high density, highly competitive hashtags that millions of other users are also using, your chances of ranking on the Top Posts page are low.

What Low, Medium and High Density Hashtags Look Like

These hashtag density levels can be thought of as:

  • High density hashtags. These are super popular hashtags with more than 500K posts associated with them. These are common hashtags like #love, #happy or #dog. Use these sparingly, if at all. Why? It’s highly unlikely your content will be served up to someone that clicks on that hashtag given the millions of posts also using the same tag.

Pupfluencer Pro Tip: Be careful using free online hashtag generators as those tools usually only pull high density hashtags. You always want to tailor your set of 30 hashtags to be specific to your content vs general and oversaturated.
  • Medium density hashtags. These are mid-range hashtags with about 50K - 500K posts. These types of hashtags are the sweet spot. They have less competition, making it easier to rank on the Top Posts page.

  • Low density hashtags. These are hashtags with less than 50K posts. With these hashtags, you have an even better chance of ranking on the Top Posts page. However, since these are the most specific type of hashtags, it’s likely you will get less visibility since less people are searching for that topic.

As an example, #dog has been used in 297M posts, which makes it a high density hashtag. That means if you post a photo to your feed and use #dog, you are competing with 297 MILLION other posts. I do not recommend using oversaturated, high density hashtags like this.

Instead, use a mix of medium and low density hashtags to increase your chances of your content making it to the Top Posts of that hashtag’s search page.
